Workplace Violence and AB 553:

Lessons Learned Over 35 Years and From Three Killers

The passage in 2023 of AB 553 puts several mandates on agencies for workplace violence prevention, training, record-keeping, and response.  Cases of workplace violence in the U.S. are both common and catastrophic. The growing number of attacks at public agencies, private-sector businesses, schools, hospitals, churches, and in public spaces heightens the need for employees to understand pre-attack warning signs, especially when they are aware of verbal, written, or cyber threats. Safety professionals play a powerful role in recognizing and responding to any workplace violence threats or incidents. Dr. Steve Albrecht is one of few threat assessment practitioners to have interviewed three workplace murderers in prison. This session will focus both on what he learned from these interviews and from working in this ever-changing field since 1992.

Dr. Steve Albrecht has written 28 books on business, security, leadership, and criminal justice topics, and co-wrote Ticking Bombs, one of the first books on workplace violence.  He is internationally known for his books, articles, keynote speeches, and training programs focused on workplace violence prevention in the K-12 and college and university spaces, healthcare, water utility support, and domestic violence response.  Steve holds a doctorate in Business Administration, an MA in Security Management, a BS in Psychology, and a BA in English. He is Board Certified in Human Resources, Security Management, Employee Coaching, and Threat Management.
